I own this DVD (I got it from Amazon) I have not watched it (so I don't know if I will even like it or not, nevertheless; that is not my point...I am sorry a reviewer needed to say this ((I am so sick of progay movies being described as 'family dramas')

I would like to comment on the reviewer that was so upset they did not know it was a gay story and that it was listed for families.

Yes, I am a gay man and I am saddened there are still so many "homophobic" people that can't open there harts to gay families.

i just bought a bootleg tape of this a couple weeks ago and now i kind of regret it. ill just say that this movie is surprisingly great for a tv movie and its one of jim carrey’s best performances. cant wait to see what special features come with it.

Not being fond of any form of jingoism, the sight of the American flag in the very first frame of this film had me reaching for the "Off" button. However I persevered and found this to be a competent but not particularly inspiring film about a couple's view of what an all-American family should be. The script is functional, production values OK but acting in this film was very uneven. Its not so much that the protagonists were not particularly engaging, but that Jim Carey in a minor role - an actor whose work I hadn't much liked till now - showed a real depth of interpretation that was well beyond anything achieved by any of the other actors.

I think the ground covered by this movie has been covered much more competently by other movies such as Todd Haynes' beautifully filmed Far From Heaven [perfect American family disrupted by husband's homosexuality & progressive wife's relationship with her gardener in a less tolerant age] and the well scripted and acted French film Just a Question of Love [self-oppression and parent's difficulty in accepting their gay son - don't be put off by the schmaltzy title.]

In comparison, Doing Time on Maple Drive is inoffensive but pedestrian.

Jim Carrey plays a lush, Lori Laughlin plays a beard to William McNamara and Bibi Besch gives an amazing performance as she cracks up near the end fo the film. Top notch acting in a TV-movie that was never really appreciated for its social commentray on disfunctional families and the effects on generations that sweep problems under the rug.

I am so sick of progay movies being described as ‘family dramas’ that I think there should be a required notice on all progay movies on the DVD cover. This review isn’t for those who think gaylife is acceptable. This is a warning to those who find it offensive to stay away from this movie. If they can’t be honest with the description of movies they produce, what are they hiding about their lifestyle?

One of the most un-funniest movies I’ve ever had the misfortune of watching. I have no idea what the studio must have been thinking when they saw the finished version of this disaster of a movie. This doesn’t even deserve a direct to video release. What a total waste of time and lots of money.

Mild social comedy with good performances by the luscious Tea Leoni (will she ever again have as good a role as she had in “Flirting with Disaster?”) and Jim Carrey (in a controlled, sad-sack performance).

There is a mild attempt at social commentary but basically this is a story about how many American couples are living beyond their means and that if should one or both lose their jobs…they end up living in their cars or worse.

Though “FWDAJ” is basically a comedy there is a deep sense of sadness underlying this story: rather than admit their financial woes, sell their luxury home and make a go at living within their now limited means…they turn to crime.

What does that say about our Society and more importantly what does that say about Us?

Wow, Jim Carrey, I thought for a while you were back to your normal crazy comidic self, but I was wrong. This movie came across as a Truman Show type comedy, it wasn’t too funny. Don’t get me wrong, I liked Truman Show, but they marketed this movie totally wrong. It was misleading, showing people all the funny parts in the trailer, so people thought it as a funny slapsticky type comedy. My advice, see a worthwhile comedy, or go for dinner instead.

Why remake a classic comedy of the 70’s? Jane Fonda and George Segal were wonderful in the original and had absolutely terrific chemistry. The remake simply can’t compare.

I'm sorry but I didn't like this movie. When you make a major literary adaptation, you should at least have all the major characters in it. And this movie forgot the two best characters, Sally and Spot. Where is Spot? Did he run away? Run, Spot, Run!

But maybe he ran too far and is gone? This breaks my heart because I loved Spot and he was my friend! And what about Sally? She was always with the mischief, and squirting the hose, and getting Dick and Jane all wet! But she is not here and how can that be? It is like having Gone with the Wind and no Scarlett O'Hara!

So, I'm sorry. This is no stars because the two best stars are gone. But I give it one star. But that star is not Dick. That star is not Jane. That star is for my Spot and my Sally. And it shines brightly for them, as if the star is a candle and it is flickering in the night, and it is wondering if they are okay...
